DURHAM, N.C. – There’s much more to the Durham County Department of Public Health than just giving shots.

Residents will see just how much more the department offers to the community on Friday, April 25, as the department celebrates Public Health Month and the conclusion of its centennial year of service.

The event, which is free and open to the public, billed as “Public Health After Hours,” will take place from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Durham County Human Services Building, located at 414 East Main Street.

To accommodate activities for the event, South Dillard Street will be closed to traffic from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. between Main and Ramseur streets. Access to the Human Services Building visitor parking lot will be available by using the South Elizabeth Street entrance.

Residents attending the event can look forward to food trucks, games, an inflatable obstacle course, music, exercise demonstrations, special guest appearances, giveaways, health screenings, and information on the department’s services and resources. A brief program highlighting the early years of the department, as well as reflections from retirees will also take place.

“This is an excellent opportunity to bring family and friends to learn what we’re really all about,” says Durham County Public Health Director Gayle B. Harris. “What we do really shouldn’t be confined to a week or a month out of the year…and it isn’t. For over 100 years, the Durham County Department of Public Health has affected the lives of every resident, everyday, and we will continue that legacy of preventing disease, promoting health, and protecting health and the environment for future generations.”

For more information about “Public Health After Hours” or any of the Durham County Department of Public Health’s programs and services, call 919-560-7600 or visit www.dconc.gov/publichealth.
