Facts:
• The Durham County Emergency Management Department will offer SKYWARN Training on Saturday, April 12, 2014 as a part of Durham County’s National County Government Month 30-day celebration.

• SKYWARN Training includes learning the basics of thunderstorm development, the fundamentals of storm structure, how to identify potential severe weather features, how to report information gathered and basic severe weather safety.
• The training is free and open to the public, but requires registration. To register for the upcoming SKYWARN Training, email ddudley@dconc.gov.

• According to www.skywarn.org, SKYWARN volunteers help weather service agencies gather important data regarding storms. “SKYWARN is a volunteer program with nearly 290,000 training severe weather spotters. These volunteers help keep their local communities safe by providing timely and accurate reports of severe weather to the National Weather Service.”

• This upcoming training is among programming highlighted by Durham County Government to align with the 2014 theme for National County Government Month is Ready and Resilient Counties: Prepare. Respond. Thrive.

• Durham County is among 3,069 counties nationwide that recognize the annual month-long celebration to highlight the many services and programs offered by local government entities.
