Durham, North Carolina and Minneapolis, Minnesota are approximately 1,000 miles apart. But after watching the criminal trial of former officer Chauvin and thinking about Tuesday’s guilty verdict against him, the distance between right and wrong in America felt a bit smaller. We still have a long, long way to go. But the just verdict in this trial is proof positive of the hope I have for our country – a bit of justice for George Floyd’s family and perhaps a true first step on the journey of criminal justice reform.
I shared with the community my thoughts about the criminal actions of then Officer Chauvin on the day of May 25, 2020. I agree with the prosecuting attorney in the case, who stated this
“trial was not an indictment against law enforcement, but that it was a criminal case against a specific police officer.”I felt then, as I do now, that I simply cannot understand how these incidents continue to occur and those officers responsible seemingly go unpunished. But not today – for yesterday I was filled with hope.
As Sheriff, I am cognizant our profession has been tarnished by what happened to Mr. Floyd, and many others in recent incidents. I am aware of the history of law enforcement riddled with abuses of authority that went unchecked. We must acknowledge that past which will enable us to work for a better future – better policing, and improved community relations.
Today I am honored to lead a law enforcement agency committed to transparency, engagement, and accountability. An organization committed to the fair and impartial treatment of humankind. We will keep serving our great community by example. On behalf of DCSO’s collective spirit of service, we continue serving Durham County with Honor, Duty, and Service.
