The term “blown out of the water,” is an understatement describing EMS Chief Skip Kirkwood’s reaction to Durham County Emergency Medical Services performance at the 1st Annual North Carolina Tactical Medial Association Tactical Medic Competition. The Durham County Tactical Emergency Medical Support (TEMS) Team, represented by Paramedic II Kevin O’Connor and Paramedic I Mike Szymanski, took first place in three timed competition events held on Saturday, September 28, 2013 in Greensboro, North Carolina.

“I am very proud of these two outstanding paramedics,” said Skip Kirkwood, director and chief paramedic for Durham County Emergency Medical Services. “It was their first time in this competition and had no idea what to expect.”

The first event was a test of cardiovascular strength and fitness, requiring the display of cardiovascular fitness, upper body strength, and strong teamwork. The second event involved the rescue and treatment of two wounded police officers where advanced airway management, hemorrhage control, care under fire, working with cover and concealment, and team coordination were tested. The last event tested the team’s skills in the area of triage and rescue of wounded civilians, in the aftermath of a simulated active shooter event.

“This TEMS Team is just one example of how all our Durham County medics are ready to provide the best of care in whatever circumstances they encounter.”
