MULTI-COUNTY BREAK-IN SUSPECT ARRESTED

Durham, N.C., Nov. 15, 2013—A Durham man has been arrested following an investigation by Durham County Sheriff’s detectives into dozens of residential break-ins throughout Durham County and neighboring counties. Sheriff’s officials say additional charges and arrests are likely as the multi-jurisdiction investigation continues.

The case began November 9 when sheriff’s deputies responded to a home in the 6100-block of Baird Street in Durham to investigate a reported break-in. While gathering information about the crime, deputies learned that a neighbor had an outdoor video surveillance system that captured images of the suspects. Deputies reviewed the neighbor’s surveillance footage and could clearly see suspects pulling a vehicle into the neighbor’s driveway, approaching the victim’s house, and leaving a few minutes later.
BREAK-IN SUSPECT

Armed with images of the vehicle used during the break-in, sheriff’s investigators narrowed their focus of potential suspects, and eventually settled on Kamel Mark Hanna, 25, of 423 Edwards St in Durham. Deputies obtained a search warrant and served it at Hanna’s residence on Monday. The search uncovered hundreds of items including firearms, jewelry and electronics that sheriff’s officials say belong to dozens of victims in the Triangle area. Hanna was arrested Monday following the search of his residence and is being held in the Durham County Jail under a $670,000 bond. He is charged with breaking and entering (11 counts), possession of stolen property (8 counts), larceny after breaking and entering (11 counts), possession of a stolen firearm (3 counts), and possession of a firearm by a felon (3 counts).“Having your home broken into is very personal and upsetting. I hope that the arrest of this individual will bring piece-of-mind to those who have been victimized and demonstrate that we do our best to solve every crime that is reported to us,” Durham County Sheriff Mike Andrews said. “That said, we can’t do it alone. I encourage everyone to look out for yourself and your neighbors. Please call us immediately if you observe any suspicious activity or people in your neighborhood.”

As of this morning, Durham County detectives have linked Hanna to 11 break-ins in the sheriff’s jurisdiction, three Durham Police Department cases, five cases in Wake County, and one case in Orange County. Investigators have also named Eric Michael Jordan, 28, of 10610 Westgate Club Dr, Raleigh, and Alexander Galifinakis, 28, of 311 S Lasalle St, Durham, as persons of interest in the case and are encouraging them to come forward for questioning.

Sheriff’s officials have seized hundreds of pieces of property believed to have been stolen by Hanna. They request that anyone who believes their property may have been recovered during this investigation contact the law enforcement agency with which they filed a report.
