Howerton to Chair NCACC’s Justice and Public Safety Committee

Durham, NC –Durham County Commission Vice Chair Brenda Howerton has been appointed to the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners’ (NCACC) Board of Directors and will chair the Justice and Public Safety Committee. The appointment was made by NCACC President B. Ray Jeffers on September 4, 2013.
“I am grateful to President Jeffers for affording me this tremendous opportunity to join with other county commissioners to help shape policy on important matters that impact people throughout our great state”, said Vice Chair Howerton.
Howerton was first elected to the Board of County Commissioners in 2008 and is currently serving her second term. She was selected by her peers as vice chair in December 2012. Commissioner Howerton previously served NCACC as vice chair of the Intergovernmental Relations Committee and as a member of the President’s Mentoring Initiative Committee.
As Chair of the Justice and Public Safety Committee, Howerton will lead fellow county commissioners and key staff in reviewing and recommending policies related to the state’s judicial system, alternatives to incarceration, jail and court fees, effective prevention programs and efforts to lower county jail costs.
