Durham, N.C. – Durham City-County Emergency Management deployed Senior Emergency Management Coordinator, David Marsee, to Hilo, Hawaii, to assist Hawaii County Civil Defense with the 2018 East Rift Zone volcanic eruptions. While in Hawaii, David will work with a team of Emergency Managers from North Carolina and Virginia in the management of the incident. The deployment will last ten days.
Hawaii requested Emergency Management assistance through the Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) and North Carolina answered the call. Marsee is a member of the third team of assistance that’s been sent to Hawaii. For more information on EMAC, visit www.emacweb.org.
“We’re proud of the efforts of North Carolina Emergency Manager’s, especially David, who answer the call of duty on a regular basis,” said Leslie O’Connor, Division Chief of Emergency Management. “While we don’t experience volcanic eruptions in Durham, we do plan and operate under an all-hazards model. This means our principles and procedures may be applied to any type of emergency, from severe weather to volcanoes. We look forward to having David return home with many lessons learned that may be applied to Durham City and County.”
