DWI CHECKPOINT SNAGS 6 IMPAIRED DRIVERS
Durham, N.C., Dec. 10, 2012—A DWI checkpoint hosted by the Durham County Sheriff’s Office removed six impaired drivers from Durham’s roadways Saturday night. The checkpoint coincided with the beginning of the holiday Booze It & Lose It enforcement campaign that runs through Jan. 2.
Several local agencies assisted with the checkpoint, including the Durham Police Department, the North Carolina Central University Police Department, the N.C. Highway Patrol, and the N.C. DMV License and Theft Bureau. The checkpoint was also supported by the Durham chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving, the Durham County District Attorney’s Office, the Durham County Magistrate’s Office, and the N.C. Governor’s Highway Safety Program.
In addition to making six DWI arrests, law enforcement officers also recovered one stolen vehicle being driven by a 15-year-old, and investigated a fake driver’s license. The following citations were issued:
• 24 Driving While License Revoked
• 1 Seatbelt Violation
• 1 Child Seatbelt Violation
• 1 No Insurance
• 27 non-criminal traffic violations listed as “other”
The checkpoint was held near the intersection of South Miami Boulevard and Ellis Road in front of Bethesda Elementary School and operated from 10 p.m. Saturday to 1:30 a.m. Sunday.
The holiday period defined as the time between Thanksgiving and New Year’s is the most dangerous time of year for motorists due to higher traffic volumes and more impaired drivers. During the month of December, 25 people die each day across the U.S. in crashes caused by impaired drivers, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.
