Durham County Detention Facility implements next phase of detainee movement schedule
Durham, N.C., October 6, 2015—Detainee restrictions have been further reduced in keeping with the planned effort to increase the amount of time that inmates are allowed out of their cells. Specifically, general population detainees will be permitted to utilize the housing unit’s common and recreation areas eight hours each day, which doubles the amount of time that inmates had been allowed out of their cells.
The schedule adjustment reflects the Sheriff’s continued pledge to only impose restrictions that are necessary for the safe operation of the facility. “We remain committed to the safety of staff and detainees,” Sheriff Mike Andrews said. “Detainee conduct will determine the facility’s schedule as it relates to inmate movement. It will also continue to drive decisions regarding any future phases of the schedule. Providing a secure environment while valuing the needs of those in the facility remains my primary focus.”
