SHERIFF’S OFFICE DEPLOYS 31 IN-CAR CAMERAS

Durham, N.C., September 11, 2014—The Durham County Sheriff’s Office has installed 31 in-car cameras in its vehicles.
The cameras have been assigned to vehicles in the Patrol Division. Each deputy with a camera is also outfitted with a microphone that can capture audio even when the deputy is away from the vehicle. In addition to the front-facing camera in the vehicle, an additional camera captures images in the detainee compartment.

“In-car cameras are an important way to advance law enforcement training efforts and promote transparency,” Durham County Sheriff Mike Andrews said. “I am excited that technology offers ways to evaluate our actions as we embrace innovations in policing and strive to provide exceptional service.”

The Sheriff’s Office plans to install an additional nine in-car cameras in the near future.
