Durham, N.C. – The Durham County Veteran Services Department invites the community to its inaugural Women Veterans Recognition Day Celebration at 11 a.m. on Thursday, June 12, 2025. This event, celebrating the incredible contributions of women who courageously served in the United States Armed Forces, will take place in Conference Room 466 in the Administration II Building, located at 201 E. Main St in downtown Durham.
Observed annually on June 12, Women Veterans Recognition Day marks the anniversary of the day, June 12, 1948, President Harry S. Truman signed into law the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act which allowed women to serve as permanent, regular members of the U.S. Armed Forces. First recognized by the New York State Assembly in 2008, this commemorative day has since gained support across the country.
This year, Durham County will join those honoring the courage, service, and sacrifice of women veterans, past and present. The program will include inspiring guest speakers Jasmine Lubbad, Patricia Blackwell, and Chrisma Brock, local women veterans who will share their stories and personal reflections on their journeys in the military. The event will also include the presentation of the first proclamation issued by the Durham Board of County Commissioners declaring June 12 as Women Veterans Recognition Day in Durham County.
Light refreshments will be provided. Local vendors will also be on-site, offering information on community resources and support services available to veterans.
“Durham County Veteran Services is honored to celebrate the strength and resilience of women in our military,” says Durham County Veteran Services Officer Hellen W. Juarez Ruiz. “We proudly stand with veterans in our community to raise awareness, foster community solidarity, and remind everyone we are stronger together.”
The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required due to limited space. Those who plan to attend should RSVP here.
Parking is available on surrounding streets and in nearby municipal garages.
