DURHAM, NC (Tuesday, January 14, 2025) - On the morning of Tuesday, January 14, deputies on duty at the Durham County Courthouse were called to the civil clerk’s office after a man who was conducting business in the building collapsed. When they arrived, the man was lying on his back with an injury to his head and was not breathing. While waiting for EMS to arrive they began life-saving efforts including accessing one of the Automated External Defibrillators (AED) located in the courthouse.
By the time EMTs arrived, they were able to revive the individual for transport to a local hospital.
“I am proud of the quick action these deputies took today,” said Sheriff Clarence F. Birkhead. “Sgt Foster, Deputy Deloatch, and Deputy Truitt did exactly what they are trained to do when someone is in need of assistance. We all pray that the man they assisted today has a full recovery.”
Durham County Sheriff’s Office deputies are required to take a bi-annual refresher class on CPR, including the utilization of AEDs, as part of their in service training.
