Post Date:12/02/2024 12:00 PM

Durham, N.C. – Today’s Board of County Commissioners Work Session included the swearing in of Durham County’s newly elected officials following the 2024 General Election.

The session began with Register of Deeds Sharon Davis taking the oath of office. Davis, who now serves in her third term, was sworn in by Chief District Court Judge Clayton Jones.

The newly elected commissioners took their oaths of office beginning with the swearing in of Commissioner Nida Allam by Associate Justice of the North Carolina Supreme Court Allison Riggs. Allam is currently serving her second term as commissioner.

Commissioners Michelle Burton, Wendy Jacobs, and Dr. Michael ‘Mike’ Lee were sworn in by North Carolina Superior Court Judge Shamieka Rhinehart. Burton and Lee will begin their first terms as commissioners for Durham County. Jacobs, now the most senior commissioner, will carry out her third term.

The final swearing in of the session was that of Commissioner Stephen Valentine. Chief District Court Judge Clayton Jones led the oath of office for Valentine who will begin his first term.

Following the ceremonial items, the BOCC voted on the chair and vice chair positions on the Board for 2024-2025. The Board unanimously selected Commissioner Allam as chair and Commissioner Lee as vice chair. For the second consecutive year, Commissioner Allam will preside over the Board of County Commissioners.

Following the elected officials’ oaths of offices and selection of leadership roles for the BOCC, each was invited to make comments.  A reoccurring charge shared by the commissioners was “let’s get to work!”
