Durham County Veteran Services Host 2024 Veterans Day Recognition and Celebration Program on Nov. 8

Facts:

  • Durham County recognizes U.S. military veterans of all branches of service during a celebration of patriotism, service and sacrifice each year on or near Veterans Day. 
  • The community is invited to join in honoring service members and their families at the 13th Annual Veterans Day Recognition and Celebration Program to be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday, November 8 in Conference Rooms B and C of the Durham County Human Services Building, located at 414 E. Main Street. It is important to note that this event date was previously advertised for November 11. The new event date is November 8.
  • Public parking is available at the surface lot on Dillard Street, next to the Human Services Building, it can be entered off Elizabeth Street. Paid parking is available in the 115 N. Queen Street parking above the first level. There are also paid parking options on the street and at the Church Street parking deck located on the 100 block of East Main Street.
  • The Durham County 2024 Veterans Day Recognition and Celebration Program will feature remarks from Interim County Manager Claudia Hager and a keynote address from Board of County Commissioners Vice Chair Nimasheena Burns.
  • The theme for this year’s event is “Loyalty and Service: Honoring all Who Served" intending to recognize the contributions of every individual who has served in the United States Armed Forces, regardless of their branch or length of service.
  • “The virtues of loyalty and service to our country are the backbone of each branch of military service,” said Lois Harvin-Ravin, Director of Durham County Veteran Services. “Long after their military service ends, our veterans continue to embody those values in their civilian lives as leaders in their workplaces, houses of worship, and communities.”
  • Veterans from all eras of service will be invited to participate in the Walk of Honor during the County’s annual celebration of Veterans.
  • Capt. Helen E. Tripp, Manager of Community Paramedics with Durham County Emergency Medical Services, will sing the National Anthem.
  • The program will include a POW/MIA presentation.
  • The event is free and open to the public. The media are encouraged to attend this event of high honor.

  • The 2024 Veterans Day holiday is Monday, November 11. The National Ceremony is held each year on November 11 at Arlington National Cemetery. The ceremony commences precisely at 11 a.m. with a wreath laying at the Tomb of the Unknowns and continues inside the Memorial Amphitheater with a parade of colors by Veterans’ organizations and remarks from dignitaries.
  • The County will take part in Operation Green Light from November 4-11, shining a green light to support military veterans, as well as raise awareness about the unique challenges faced by many veterans and the resources that are available at the county, state, and federal level to assist veterans and their families.
  • Most offices operated by the County will be closed for the Veterans Day holiday on Monday, November 11.
