Durham, N.C. – Durham County proudly invites nominations for the prestigious Elna Spaulding Leadership Award, a tribute to the remarkable women who serve and lead within our community. This award is named in honor of Elna Spaulding, a trailblazer who became the first woman elected to the Durham County Board of Commissioners in 1974. Her legacy paved the way for the historic election of the first all-female Board of County Commissioners in 2020, 46 years after her groundbreaking achievement.

The Elna Spaulding Leadership Award recognizes and celebrates the outstanding contributions of women in Durham County who demonstrate exceptional leadership, commitment, and service to the community. It aims to highlight the achievements of women leaders and inspire future generations to pursue paths of leadership and service.

Durham County residents are encouraged to nominate women who have made significant impacts in the community through their leadership and service. Nominees should embody the spirit of Elna Spaulding’s legacy, showcasing dedication to improving Durham County and supporting its residents.

To nominate a deserving woman for the Elna Spaulding Leadership Award, please complete the nomination form available on Durham County’s official website. The deadline for nominations is March 18.

Following the nomination period, a panel will review the submissions and select the award recipient, who will be honored for her contributions to Durham County. The award ceremony will take place at a special event, details of which will be announced following the selection process.
