Post Date:02/06/2024 1:59 PM

Durham, NC (Tuesday, February 6, 2024) – Patrol Units from the Durham County Sheriff’s Office recovered a vehicle overnight reported stolen from adjacent Orange County. The car was discovered just before 3:00 a.m. today along the 500 block of Old Oxford Road near Dearborn Drive.

Last year in 2023, DCSO recovered a total of 252 stolen vehicles across Durham County. “There are times when vehicles are stolen, they are then used to commit other crimes,” Durham County Sheriff Clarence Birkhead said. “Last year’s numbers clearly show this is a challenge for us in law enforcement. We will continue working with our partners both locally and across our region to make a dent in stolen vehicles as we continue asking the public that if they see something to say something.”

In order to cut down on crime overall, it is incumbent on drivers to ensure that their vehicles are secure at all times. Most car theft is a crime of opportunity, If it’s locked and personal items are removed, your chances of a break-in or theft are drastically reduced. A final safety: we advise that you never leave a firearm in an unattended vehicle. If you must, make sure you have it secured in a permanent lockbox.

Anyone with information is urged to call 911 or DCSO at 919-560-0900.
