Durham, N.C. – On Saturday, February 11, 2023, a Durham County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) supervisor discovered an issue with a controlled substance vial that was in a secure access storage safe. That individual immediately notified his supervisor, and an investigation was implemented, per standard protocols in place. During the course of their investigation, what appeared to be tampering with the vial in question was confirmed.
Durham County EMS moved to broaden their investigation on Sunday morning, and as a result, found other similar vials with clear evidence of tampering. On Monday, February 13, 2023, Durham County EMS notified the Durham County Sheriff’s Office of potential tampering with controlled substance vials and submitted their findings to the assigned investigator. The paramedic has been placed on administrative leave pending completion of the investigation.
Throughout the course of this investigation, Durham County EMS has cooperated fully with the Sheriff’s Office. At this time, the investigation remains active and as such, Durham County EMS will not comment further on this matter.
