Fast Facts
• The Tree Across Durham planting event at Burton Elementary School originally scheduled on Friday, March 7, has been rescheduled due to last week’s inclement weather that closed Durham Public Schools. The new event date is Friday, March 14, 2014.
• Trees Across Durham, with the help of Burton Elementary School students, will plant seven trees and more than 200 daffodil flower bulbs on Burton’s campus to help make the school grounds a healthier, more beautiful, cleaner, and cooler place for its students and the community.
• Volunteers and 30 students from Burton with help from three students from Southern High will plant the trees along with the flower bulbs. The trees are provided as part of Durham County’s Strategic Plan and flower bulbs are provided by Keep Durham Beautiful, Inc. Planting expertise and oversight will be provided by the City of Durham’s Urban Forestry Division and Durham Public School’s Maintenance and Grounds Division.
• This tree planting is part of a larger Trees Across Durham effort to plant trees at 29 public elementary schools in February and March 2014. Volunteers interested in helping with these tree plantings should visit the Durham City/County Sustainability Office website at www.GreenerDurham.net for more information.
• Trees Across Durham is a broad-based partnership dedicated to making Durham a healthier and greener community now and in the future through the planting and protection of trees; the education of tree care-takers and the general public about how to maintain healthy trees; and the measurement and communication of the benefits trees provide to the environment and community. • News media are invited to attend this planting. Friday’s on-site news media contact will be Durham City-County Sustainability Specialist Megan Carroll, who can be reached by cell at (919) 810-6096.
