Post Date:09/06/2020

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Durham, NC (September 6, 2020) - For the second weekend in a row, protesters gathered and marched to the Durham County Detention facility and damaged the building. On the evening of Saturday September 5th, a group of people came to the Durham County Detention Facility and threw objects at windows shattering glass and creating a public safety hazard both outside and inside the building. In addition to damaging the government building, they also removed flags from the flagpoles in front of the building and set the State of North Carolina and U.S. flags on fire while shooting fireworks at the upper floors.

The Durham County Sheriff's Office supports the right to peacefully protest. However, criminal activity will not be tolerated. Damaging and destroying property and endangering the lives of those housed inside with aerial explosives is unacceptable, illegal, and must stop.
