Durham, NC — Durham County Emergency Management, partnering first responders and HAZMAT are currently on the scene of the Downtown Durham YMCA, located at 215 W. Morgan Street, where a hypochlorite release has occurred at the location’s indoor pool at approximately 3 p.m. Hypochlorite is a chemical used for everyday maintenance of swimming pools.The YMCA has closed the swimming pool.
The spill has affected multiple pool guests including 37 kids, ages 6-12 years old and two adults. Six children are in serious condition. Patients have been transported to Duke University Hospital and to Duke Regional Hospital.
The County’s Emergency Management staff is monitoring the situation and have no additional information available at this time.
