REPOSTED: County DSS Offers Low Income Energy Program Assistance

One-time Annual Program Begins Next Week Until Funds Deplete

Durham, NC — Durham residents needing help to pay for their heating expenses can apply for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP) offered by the Durham County Department of Social Services beginning Monday, December 1, 2014. LIEAP funds, providing a one-time annual payment to help eligible families cover their heating expense, will be available until March 31, 2015 or until funds are exhausted.

Residents can submit their LIEAP application at the Old Durham County DSS Building, located at 220 E. Main St., from 8:30a.m. until 4:30p.m., Monday through Friday.

Applications will be accepted from elderly persons age 60 and above or disabled persons receiving services through the Division of Aging and Adult Services (DAAS) from December 1st through December 1, 2015. All members of the household must be age 60 or above or at least one household member must be disabled and receiving services through DAAS. Disabled persons are defined as receiving Supplemental Social Security Income, Social Security Disability, or Veterans Administration disability.

Applications for all other households will be taken from January 2-March 31, 2015 or until funds are exhausted.

In preparation for the application process, interested residents should collect required support documents and bring them along to submit with the LIEAP application. Applicants must bring a valid social security number for each household member, verification of all house hold income, and a copy of their heating bill with the account number. Clients must have a heating source such as Duke Energy in order to be eligible.
