DCSO Announces Multiple Juvenile Petitions Overnight
Stolen Car, Drugs & Alcohol Recovered as Two (2) Remain At-Large
Durham, NC (Friday, March 15, 2024) – The Durham County Sheriff’s Office announces law enforcement action against a large group of juveniles who allegedly committed a multitude of crimes just before midnight last night on Thursday, March 14th.
DCSO Patrol Units attempted a traffic stop along Hebron Road near Denfield Street (just east of North Roxboro Road) where deputies noticed a car traveling at a high rate of speed. The vehicle then crashed into a fence along Denfield Street. A total of five (5) individuals were determined to be inside the car as two (2) of the passengers jumped and fled from the scene on foot. The other three (3) were detained without further incident as EMS transported the trio to a local hospital for evaluations.
The investigation has revealed the entire group has been identified as juveniles ranging in ages from 12 to 17 years old and that the car was reported stolen out of Raleigh. In addition, Schedule VI (Controlled Substance) and alcohol were seized. The 17-year-old male driver was also charged with DWI. Juvenile petitions were processed as guardians were contacted overnight and into the early morning hours today.
The public is reminded that in North Carolina, any person(s) under the age of 21 caught purchasing, attempting to purchase or possessing alcohol will be charged with a Class 1 misdemeanor and that sentencing is left to the judge's discretion. If convicted, the Division of Motor Vehicles revokes that person's driver's license.
The investigation into this incident continues.
